The perfect mojito cocktail on a black background

How to Make the Perfect Mojito Cocktail

If there's one cocktail that perfectly embodies the laid-back, sunny spirit of summer, it's the mojito. This refreshing blend of mint, lime, sugar, and rum has been a staple at beachside bars and backyard BBQs for decades, and it's easy to see why. With its crisp, clean flavors and invigorating fizz, the mojito is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

But while the mojito may be simple to sip, it can be a bit trickier to make. Like any classic cocktail, the mojito requires a bit of finesse and attention to detail to get it just right. So if you're looking to impress your friends with your mixology skills, or just want to enjoy a perfectly balanced mojito at home, here's everything you need to know.

Ingredients:

  • 50ml white rum
  • 25ml fresh lime juice
  • 12.5ml simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, dissolved)
  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • Soda Water
  • Crushed ice

Garnish:

  • Big sprig of mint
  • Lime wedge

Instructions:

  1. Add the limes wedges & sugar to a glass.
  2. Muddle the limes & sugar to realise all the juice.
  3. Clap the mint leaves in your hands and rub them to realise the flavour & drop them into the glass.
  4. Fill the glass with crushed ice to the top.
  5. Add 50 ml of White Rum to the glass.
  6. Use your bar spoon to churn all the ingredients together & dilute the rum with the sugar & lime.
  7. Add more crushed ice and top with soda water.
  8. Garnish with a large sprig of mint & a lime wedge and serve immediately..

And that's it – you've just made the perfect mojito! Of course, there are a few things you can do to tweak this recipe to your taste. If you prefer a sweeter mojito, you can add a bit more simple syrup. If you like it on the tart side, you can use a bit less. And if you really love mint, you can add a few extra leaves to give it a more herbaceous kick.

One thing to keep in mind is that the quality of your ingredients will make a big difference in the final product. Be sure to use fresh, high-quality lime juice and mint, and avoid pre-made mixes or artificial syrups. And while you can certainly use a lower-grade rum in a pinch, it's worth splurging on a good-quality white rum for the best flavour. If you want something a bit different try using a golden rum and Demerara sugar syrup for deeper flavour.

So there you have it – everything you need to know to make the perfect mojito cocktail. Whether you're hosting a party or just looking for a refreshing drink on a hot day, this classic recipe is sure to please. Happy sipping!
